Cleaning power tools

Post by Hoovie »

My tools are getting in a sorry state with the sawn dust clagging up a circular saw in particular (wood, MDF & Aquapanel most recently)- I was planning a bit of a clean up session and lubrication with 3-in-1 oil.

Before I do this, just thought I would get a quick check of if anyone sees any problem with this or if there are any other more suitable products?

Cheers,

Hoovie :thumbright:
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I use compressed air to blast the dust out. This clears most stuff away. I then use kitchen towel soaked in WD40 and give them a wipe over. Now the damp weather approached it is a good time to give everything a wipe with WD40.

Give them a good blow through with an airline.
If theres a lot or resin around router cits, saw blades etc, i believe oven cleaner works well. :thumbright:

Wul;d I be right in thinking MDF is very resin 'rich'?

Has WD40 sort of replaced 3-in-1 as lubrication of choice - I thought if you apply a sheen of 3-in-1 or similar with a kitchen towel on a saw, then that keeps the rust away but WD40 tends to evaporate?

(maybe I am just showing my age and old fashioned ways  )

There are many lubricates you can use to wipe and clean your gear with. Take the one that you like the best and use. If you have a owners manual than read what they have to say.

If your looking for something to keep moisture at bay, there are sprays designed just for protecting tools.

Rocol do a range, but its not cheap. There are a few others about.

I once used sprayed a whole can of WD40 into the engine bay of my clio, electrics mostly but no one told me not to spray the manifold (It looked rusty!) Next time I started her up there was white smoke comming through the air vents and enveloping the car....but she always started first time!

tried to use a Ryobi Circular saw I got 2nd hand on ebay to cut a 4' length of marine ply today - kept jamming up - sprayed the PTFE on the blade and tried again - perfect!

Cheers Tim :thumbright:
