Nice job Hoovie! I hate documentation so I'm doubly impressed with your writting up that walkthrough.

Reckon it is amazing how these things have come down in price and still quality kit

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

You should be able to get some software that will play them from any region.
What software are you using to watch your dvd's now?

DVDs are linked to regions,as you have found out. You can usually change the region on the player you have to watch a movie from another region, but only 4 times untl it is locked to last region - that should be an option for you.
My suggestion is to use another peice of s/w for the movies that are say Region 1 if most of your movides are Region 2
Best S/W to use is VideoLan (aka VLAN) - that will play just about any video from anywhere without complaining
google VideoLAN - it's a free download
