So after major hassles brought on by a broken bonnet catch, I've decided to make another grille from stainless mesh,. However instead of being secured on the inside of the bonnet, I want the new fixings to go from the outside inwards so if the cable fails in the future then I can just unscrew the grille and access the catch.
However that opens up a slight issue....needs captive nuts on the inside, which means welding onto a bonnet thats made from aluminium...Any tips or suitable alternatives to welding?

Rivnuts.... you don't want to be welding to your bonnet do you!?
Besides the issue of needing aluminum nuts.... you won't weld steel or stainless ones to ally.
How about pop rivets, just drill them out if you need to remove the grille.....

I would 2 part resin bond aluminium brackets to the underside of the bonnet, if the SS grill is not too heavy and unlikely to vibrate, then attach to that as above^.
