Harwax oil

Post by Ruth »

Hi I have been looking up on this osmo hardwax oil. I'm a little confused. Can I put this stuff down on a stained floor - I want to stain my newly sanded floor a dark oak colour. The stuff I have seen seems to imply that it goes down on a bare floor. Any advice would be appreciated and also which is the best floor dye? Thanks.

Hi Ruth, the usual resion for 'bare' floor is that the first application will penertrate and act as a primer, with you wanting to stain your floor, have a look at the Ronseal wood dyes, they are liquid, unlike other 'stains' and will penertate the timber but not seal it, try on scrap timber first, to check colour, you can not change it easy.

You will then have no trouble with putting your wax finish on, once the stain is dry. :thumbright:

osmo goes down very very quickly and evenly if you use a 9" roller and it dries rapidly

i did two coats in a day on a 50 square metre floor, it was a warm late summer day last year, first coat at 8am second coat 4:30pm

it looked fantasic to me, the client was over the moon

Thanks guys that's just what I wanted to hear. Cheers. I hope it is worth all the effort. My house is in utter chaos since we started this job. By the way, I couldn't get the white stuff off my skirtings so I have sacked it and they are now being painted. first time ever been defeated.

i prefere a painted skirting board on a wooden floor, i think they frame the floor and look more stylish.

Sorry if this sounds obvious but do you mean I can use any liquid stain and then finish with the clear wax? The reason I ask is that Osmo is not available to the north other than mail order whereas I can visit local diy for ronseal which I can get better idea of colour.

Also, does anyone know if Ronseal floor wax is any good? I ask urgently as I need to get this floor done pronto. Thanks.

wax is a very bad idea for a floor as wax is not waterproof and you will fetch it off when you mop the floor

ronseal wax is horrible too, briwax is the only decent wax imo

but you need to be using oil on the floor, danish oil will make a nice job

Thanks it is finally making sense - I am not in the profession but want to do a good job. Thank goodness you uncrossed my wires.

So, I can use any liquid stain and then finish it with hardwax OIL not hardoil wax. That's handy to know. Thank you all very much. I won't be asking for any employment!

I think I will phone the Osmo people tomorrow and see if I can have some samples of stain/dyes that they use.

Thanks again.
