Power leads for laptops..

Do they come in a few plug sizes or are they all specific to individual machines

Somehow how one is playing up..we offered up the plug from another brand of machine but the plug was smaller

Is it possible to buy these leads from a computer retailer or will we need to contact the manufacturers?

As Foggy has linked. Also Kensignton make 'universal' ones but make sure that the AC transformer you are using is compatible.

Thngs to check are:

Positive or Negative tip: no standard here - you reverse polarity, it is goodnight vienna

DC Voltage out: is is close enough (+-10 % should be ok, exact match is best

)

Look at the back of the laptop and it should tell you both the polarity and DC voltage.

Power Rated : is it big enough to cope? Laptop adapters come with power ratings anywhere from 40W upto 200W+. Oversized is ok, undersized could damage the adaprter and possibly the laptop.

Check ebay for a replacement also - these are a very common item and you may pick up the right one pretty cheap

Why are different Laptops having different plug sizes?

Beucase they have different power requirements is one main answer.

Some need 18.5V & 2.4A
Others want 15V & 3A

They dont' like being supplied the wrong power, I know I tried, I have a melted powersupply from an HP laptop that I attached a plug for a Toshiba tablet...not a nice smell....
