Not heard this one for a while........Winnie Mandela visits the doctors & is told to strip off & lay on the floor! The doctor then aske her to move over to the other side of the room & lay down.. After a while Winnie asks the doctor "is this relevant" & the doctor replies "well I have a black leather sofa being delivered next week & I wanted to see where about's it would look best.

I worked as a courier when I first left college and my other half worked at Church house so I often used to pick her up - well as often as she would dare to get on the bike through rush hour London

Anyway there's a private garden (Deans yard) between Church House and Westminster Abbey and I sort of had permission to plot the bike up there to wait for her.

The gardens are absolutely beautiful, watered by hand every night etc and one time I see this geezer with purple robes wandering about with about a dozen blokes just watching him. This was around 1994 so security was a lot less strict then so I decided to go and say hello.

He was wandering about and I opened with the epic line 'Excuse me Mr Tutu can I just say hi or are you praying or something?'

He told me he was just admiring the gardens and shook my hand then we chatted for ten mins or so, really nice bloke very calm and peaceful vibe!

I did tell him I wasn't a religious person, just wanted to shake the hand of someone that had done so much good in his lifetime. He came back with 'Never mind my son God will understand'

We talked for about ten minutes - he said he loves talking to people that aren't church flunkies though he didn't put it exactly like that!

So I goes back to the bike and there's someone there waiting for me. 'Ray can you pop up and see David please?' David being the manager of church house and not someone you want to be summoned too And when I got there he was not a happy man.

So he's about to read me the riot act for accosting the Archbishop; the other half is in the office not looking to pleased with me when one of Tutus' entourage knocks the door. 'Excuse me David but the Archbishop asked me to pass on his thanks to Ray, he really enjoyed the conversation and please feel free to approach him again some time'

Now as the flunky was actually a cardinal from the Vatican David suddenly there wasn't a problem and David wanted to be my bestest mate

It was an experience that'll stay with me, not so much meeting the man although that was an honour but the fact he sent someone to make sure that things didn't go pearshaped afterwards shows real thought.

Now that's someone I'd mourn not someone who was at least as bad as the regime he was trying to overthrow and was made a martyr whilst he was still alive.

Some of the guys at the top of the church are the kind of people you wouldn't want to chat with in case you caught something...

but others are incredible people, and as Razor said, are kind, considerate and genuinely good people.

Nelson Mandela obviously had huge amounts of charisma, but beyond that, who knows.
