Until Friday i have always used free antivirus and firewall, bought a new pc and was offered three years McAfee for £60.00 for all computers and smart phones. Plug new computer in, set it up download Google chrome and total wipe out computer is hacked. Go back to well known shop and they say that is normal with Google chrome or Firefox. They said it will have to be set back to factory settings, going to do that today.

Chrome/Firefox are no more prone to viruses thatn any other software - a new PC should be virus-free and there's no way you need to PAY for such virus protection software either.

Downloading either Chrome or Firefox - especially from their trusted sites - is also safe to do. The built-in firewall of Windows will suffice until you get virus software downloaded and running.

If the machine had a virus from switch-on YOU didn't do it....... and I have a suscpicion that the seller may be duping you into paying for software....

the first thing i do is remove the free mcfee from my laptop
i use firefox and avg free versions and addblockplus all sorted

Sounds a bit odd......must be more to it than just that?

They always used to be considered less vulnerable as most nasties were directed at the once most popular browser, Internet Explorer.

Indeed. unless chrome was downloaded from a torrent site...

I re-installed Win7 some weeks ago. After installation was completed I then installed Chrome, then my email client, then the drivers for my graphics card, a few other programs then finally Avast AV. Before I knew it, I'd got some malware, hijacking my browser. So annoying, that a week later I re-installed Win7, but had already d/loaded Avast to a usb stick on the missus computer. Installed it on to my computer before allowing internet access. Touchwood, it's been fine since.

Been in contact with HP and the fault is with the computer and not my fault for downloading a virus like the shop said. They have instructed the shop to give me a new one. While waiting at the shop in a long queue and seeing how peoples complaints were being treated as an ex shop owner i was shocked.
