Stopcock, awkward access, stuck in corner behind corner unit

Post by manny »

(Sorry for another new post. I did try and merge it with my post about the sink waste.)
Another problem I have is the position of the stopcock.
It's right in the corner of the kitchen where a corner unit and adjoining back wall unit will go.
I could make a access hole in the corner unit. But for people less flexible it might be difficult for them to access it.
Can it be moved?

Here are the two units.

And this is a pic showing it's position and lack of access.

Yes the stopcock can be moved,

Question would be where would you move it to?

You're obviously going to have to box in the pipes in the corner above the units, so maybe you could move it up the pipe, move the connection on the right above it. It would then be easy enough to build an access door into the boxing.

Though if you do as BG suggests you'll need an isolator for the cold side of the kitchen tap...

Has anyone tried one of these? If there was enough room then this would be a solution to this sort of problem

Yes, I do have a Surestop but I'm absolutely very dam-ned sure I didn't pay that much for it!!!!!! I use it regularly, though not on the mains feed - I use it for an outside tap and it has worked perfectly for at least the last ten or more years. The o/s tap is fed from the plumbing to a concealed toilet cistern in a downstairs shower room by drilling through the wall to the outside and provides a tap to a part of the garden that would not otherwise have one.

It consists of a 15mm push-fit plastic valve assembly that is inserted into the water feed to the tap. (Like a speedfit fitting, it can be removed/relocated by pushing the end rings inwards and I have moved/replumbed it several times, which is another story).

From the valve a hollow plastic air tube is run to the SureStop switch, there was plenty of length in the kit, my criticism is that the switch I have appears to work upside-down. It is entirely mechanical, no electrics needed, in winter, I isolate the o/s tap by pressing the switch, and it works. The tube is buried in the wall under the tiles.

However, OP doesn't have a lot of space to play with and some thought will be required. But it can be made to work, so that OP isolates his mains feed by flicking the switch that can be located anywhere that the tubing will reach (and labelled as such).

If that question was addresses to me, yes it does seem like the mains pipe that comes into the house is lead (only a small section thought right at the bottom).

sure stops work just fine .. best solution is to remove all the old pipework .. renew .. leave existing stop tap in place but put another one in line in a more accessible place .. ie under sink on back wall . obviously allowing enough room to access the tap should a service be in order .This means you can get the new pipework to be in exactly the correct place for the sink and taps , quicker and easier in the long run .. as for placing the tap above worktop in boxing seems to me an issue if you want to tile the boxing without having an unsightly door to make look good .
