Can't make calls to Vodaphone

Bit of a long shot this one. There's an old mate of mine who doesn't have a landline, just a mobile with Vodaphone. When I try to call him from my landline, I can hear the ringing tone, but he says his phone doesn't ring, and he gets "Something about call screening" showing on his phone. He's got an old phone, (don't know what make) really bad eyesight, and he's not at all tech savvy.
I can call other mobiles fine. I've recently taken out a new contract with my landline supplier, and it includes a number of "free" minutes to mobile numbers.
Any ideas of anything I can tell him to try to cure this?

Need to know the phone model really.

Could either be the network providing the blocking or the phone.

Is your number withheld when you ring people? Might be that, if it is - phone blocking anonymous calls.

removing the battery /restarting the phone is my first starting point when random things happen

Nothing to do with this end as far as I can tell. He can see our number which is being screened if he notices, but the phone isn't ringing. No automatic withholds on our phone. I've phoned three or four other different mobiles and it's fine.

I'll try to get the model of the phone. Might even be a manual online.
