tiling over wooden wall
Good morning I need some advice please. I've changed my bathroom around to suit my boss (hope she doesn't see this) to make more room, we had a wall knocked down and a wooden wall put in it's place. I PVA'ed it then tiled it, in the morning I noticed a loose tile, now I see more so I took them all off. If I screwed plaster board to the wood then had it skimmed would I then be able to tile it.
Thanks in hope

Re: tiling over wooden wall
What do you mean by a wooden wall? Is it ply?
Yes, you can screw plasterboard over it and then tile, no need to skim.

Do not ever use PVA as a primer for tiling. The only tiling adhesive I've ever seen that recommends PVA was unibond ready mixed addy, and that is only good for tiles max size about 150mm square.hennase wrote:Good morning I PVA'ed it then tiled it,
What adhesive are you using ?

Re: tiling over wooden wall
Morning, I have made a crap job of this, I've carried out tiling in my old house and never PVA'ed before, I did it this time as the walls were not very good and I wouldn't get around to tiling them for a few days.
I've some tiles on another wall that have stayed on but now I feel I should take them off.
If I used plywood and screwed that to the wall would that be ok or should I use plasterboard.
The name of the adhesive I'm using is Webber fix next to it, it has WR I got it from Jewson.
I really appreciate the help. Thank you

Re: tiling over wooden wall
Ply is not a good substrate for tiling and you would be better off using plasterboard or Aquapanel if it is a wet area. As far as PVA'ing before tiling it really depends if the area is likely to get damp. Moisture can reactivate the PVA and loosen the bond but I have PVA'd tiling back in the 70's when it was quite usual to do this and the tiles in my bathroom never came loose or fell off.
I do not entirely go along with the reactivated PVA theory in that the moisture from the tiling adhesive when tiling does not seem to affect it and you would expect that to cause an issue??? I think that water getting behind tiles in a shower for a long time will loosen tiles up anyway regardless. Put old used tiles in a bucket of water for a day and the adhesive softens and falls off.
Do not fret too much about it.

Re: tiling over wooden wall
Nothing to do with water "re-activating" the PVA; The PVA stops the tile adhesive from bonding to whatever the substrate is by providing a "barrier" between the adhesive and the substrate.dewaltdisney wrote:As far as PVA'ing before tiling it really depends if the area is likely to get damp. I'm sure there is a sticky in the tiling forum that explains in more detail.

yes, the grey side (paper) not the brown side.hennase wrote:Good day thank you for the information. Is there a right side or a wrong side to use for the plasterboard.
And as per link above do not use PVA.
I've never used the addy you mention, there should be guidelines on the bag as to what sort of primer the manufacturer recommends.

Re: tiling over wooden wall
Whilst I do agree with the main thrust of Mudsters original PVA warning, and I would never PVA these days, walk with me on this Wino. The diluted PVA coat skin is incredibly thin and depending on the porosity of the wall it will govern how much of it sinks in. When you put the adhesive on the comb scratches through the PVA skin somewhat and the moisture in the adhesive, depending what sort, will react. That is why wood is worst as the PVA does not sink in much and therefore the skin is thicker and invariably the bond will be poor and collapse. But, I have stripped off tiles on old showers stuck on marine ply that have held on really well in the main and it is only the wet penetration where it has failed. One for definite I know had PVA on as a primer. So I think that it is deffo a no no these days with the knowledge we now have but I do not think it was attributable to the failure rates indicated.
It is of no importance but that is my experience.
