Trying to install security light!!!! Please HELP!!

Post by dave2801 »

Hi there,

Im trying to install a security light outside my back door. Ive got the perfect place to put it but dont know how to wire it up. I can feed the wire from the light through the wall to my kitchen via a nice little hole I drilled!, but where do I wire it up to? Can I wire it up to a socket (plug) that I dont use or do I have to do anything else? It seems so easy till you look at the bigger picture. Ive also got 2 mains power sockets for the washing machine and tumble dryer next to the wall socket Im not using, are these of any help.

Thanks for all help and tips

Due to new regulations which you may or may not of heard of called part P of the building regulations you are not permitted to carry out any electrical work outside your house unless you are registered to do so. However if you do as you are proposing and use a plug and socket to connect to the mains, then you are allowed to. Strange but true. There is nothing wrong with using a plug to feed your outside light, just make sure you put a 3A fuse in the plug.

Like sparkydude says stick a plug on it.

I didn´t think that an outside light fell under part p as it is connected to an inside existing circuit. I am sure I have seen this on the IEE website :?
