Builder can’t lay bricks for toffee

Post by Toffercol »

Hey guys,

Got some builders building me an extension..... i’m not happy with the standard of brickwork.

1 of the brickies is ok. Not great but acceptable. The second (who is the owner of the company) is pretty bad.

I’ve just gone over it all with a level and string line as it’s pretty poor.

1) Mortar beds vary from 5mm to 20mm.
2) Perps are all over the place ranging from 5mm to 25mm wide.
3) Face of the bricks are in and out all over. I can nearly fit my fingers between the level and the face of the bricks.
4) Pointing is scruffy.
5) The inner skin of blockwork is 25mm out of plumb.
6) Cavity is 110mm wide at bottom and 145mm wide at top.

I did bring up the fact that some of the brickwork was a little ropey about a week ago and he blamed the bricks, as some of them have quite bad curves on them, he also blamed that the original house is out from one side to the other. Which i’m pretty sure it actually is as one side has suffered some subsidence back in the past. Surely you still build the new bit straight and level though? He did say he’d marked some of the bricks and he was going to swap them out for a straighter brick. However.... as more brick and blockwork has gone up the standard has got worse.

How would you deal with this? Any help and advice much appreciated.

cheapest quote ? European builders ?

I wouldn't be happy with the work, are there enough wall ties and has it been tied to the house ?

No not cheapest quote......... came recommended.

Just discovered why the perps have ended up wider. Measured the bricks. First batch are 215mm. Second batch 210mm! Brickie should have spotted this though.
