Looking for PAYG sim
Post by Someone-Else »
As the title says I am looking for a PAYG sim, BUT its for someone who is almost deaf, but can see ok, so it will probably use more data than minutes, your thoughts / experiances please gentlemen.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

How much data etc? It's a balancing act between price and usage.
I have a 1p Mobile sim which works very well for my needs but might not for others.

I recently moved to Tesco mobile. I have nothing but praise for the service. I was paying about £11 a month on both our phones for very basic minutes and data packages with EE and Vodafone. I swapped to pay monthly contracts with Tesco and we both got new good smartphones, my Galaxy and a Nokia for Mrs D, and it only cost about £4 extra combined for a load of minutes and data. Have a look through at the PAYG.https://www.tescomobile.com/

Over recent years I've found pay monthly (with no contract) much better than PAYG. Perhaps if you can add how much data they are looking at (roughly), and whether a new phone is needed, we can advise better...

I tried contract for many years, even the cheapest contract is still far more costly than my PAYG outgoings.

Fair enough. I guess it comes down to usage and whether you have an existing phone. I bought a phone two and a half years ago which is still going strong, and so need SIM only. I recently switched to Lebara. I got the SIM on promotion and it is £2.50 a month for the first six months, then £5 a month thereafter. Plus a £10 credit for porting my number to them. Package wise, that's for 2GB, 1000min, 1000SMS. Unlimited calls and messages to other Lebara users.

Yeah it also depends on where you use your phone. I work from home so I have wifi all day which allows me free messaging and phone calls using apps like Whatsapp. I make the occasional phone call when out at the shops for instance but that amounts to maybe 10-20p per month at most, same for text messages, a few pence per month.
The only time I actually spend any money on data is when I am travelling but even then I only use maybe 50p-£1 per day so even a 5 day trip costs me less than the monthly cost of even the cheapest contract. I buy my own phone waiting for a model that has just been surpassed so I get a good deal, cheap contracts don't tend to come with the phones that I want.

When I was with EE I always seemed to bust my monthly measly 250mb a month data. Often I use Google maps on the move to check for traffic jams and surfing while I am waiting for Mrs D etc. The £11 a month was a rip off. I was idly looking in Tesco at the phones as I was sick of buying phones for SIM only. I had bought three Motorola phones that only lasted two years each and then I bought a cheap Ulefone which was slow and sh*t. I got a Galaxy AS21, 2GB of data, 2500 mins of calls and 2500 texts all for £16 a month. I get a new phone in two years if I want. This costs £16 a month and Mrs D got a Nokia on a similar tariff /deal for £12 a month plus all the data and minutes were doubled for six months as we were new customers. I never get near my monthly allowance now and we use our mobiles instead of my landline now. So compared to what we were paying the Tesco deal really works for me. There are loads of deals and combinations to have so check it out.

My partner's Motorola lasted for just over a couple of years. Mine's still going after 2 and a half, but it's definitely showing it's age and I wonder how much longer it will last. You've got to give them credit for their consistency in planned obsolescence!dewaltdisney wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 11:56 am I had bought three Motorola phones that only lasted two years each

It's not PAYG but Vodafone just brought out a deal Vodafone Red plan - Unlimited Mins, Texts and 60GB 18 months for £16pm (with £204 Cashback making effectively £4.67pm). This is with fonehouse who I was with a couple of years ago and had no problem with. You've just got to remember to set up your calendar so you claim the cashback.
£4.67 for unlimited mins, texts and 60Gb of data is an insane price.
