Hiding legs on a stand alone unit?

Post by tadaska »

From what I understand usually units go from wall to wall and a covering strip on the bottom hides the legs of all the units. But what if my units are not going wall to wall?

I want the worktop going all the way wall to wall ~3m but not the units underneath. I'll have one 0.4m unit at each end and one in the middle with gaps in between them. How do legs get covered in such situations? The old units I have now don't have legs and their side walls go all the way to the floor. What do I do with the sides of units with legs?

Those would be the units: https://www.diy-kitchens.com/kitchen-un ... FMyElX7Qkk

You can buy base end panels from b&q or eBay for about £20-30 per panel but you may be able to buy a sheet of conti board and make your own.

You can easily make up kickboards to cover three sides. You mitre the corners and fit staggered clips so they fit on the same legs for support. If they are colour coded then you have to go with the supplier kickboards but if black you can buy some melamine faced chipboard cut it to fit, and spray it with a rattle can.

I'm not keen on the idea of end panels in this scenario. Kickboards on the sides is better in my opinion. Do you think it is possible to buy 40cm long kickboards with laminated ends? Or do I have to cut them to length and stick something on the ends for the front kickboards?

You mitre the front corners so you do not need to cover the cuts as they will be hidden. You could fit angle brackets to reinforce the corners inside and this might avoid the need for a load of clips as the 'u' shaped board assembly will just slot in.

That sounds good. Don't have a mitre but I'll think of something. Worst case I can always take it to the local joinery and get them to mitre.
