Hi Guys,
I'm in need of a domestic sized chipper for my back yard.
I think it will be mainly wood being chipped, maybe 20-30% have some leaves on. but not too much green. The wet green I can just put on compost for the most part, a shredder that could do everything would be great but I've had a bad experience in the past with machines clogging up. I have around half an acre so don't want a particularly large machine clogging up the garden. Am I better off renting one or buying one out right? Any recommendations/reviews for products on the market right now? Thanks for you help!

Domestic Chipper / Shredder

I think it depends on your job and whether there is a justifiable cost to buying a chipper or just a typical garden waste machine. I have a lot of Laurels and my chipper works very well on the branches and leaves in one pass. I do not overtax it and I stick to up to 1" thick branches. It reduces it all to chips and mulch. Green wood chips best, older stuff tends to get hard and chatters a bit. I do not think chippers are very good at general garden waste as this would clog if you feed it too fast. This is the one I have https://hyundaipowerequipment.co.uk/gar ... -shredder/ I think they are probably a Chinese machine that is painted and has decals for various suppliers so shop around.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did spy a couple of machines with very similar design. I've been looking at a Forest Master 'mulcher' which seems to fit my requirements - if anyone has any reviews or experience with this machine? I'm a bit skeptical as I've seen the same machine on Amazon but with no reviews.

They are basically the same type of machine, not great for a lot of green waste that tends to choke the funnel feed. The 6.5hp lawnmower power motor has a direct drive block on the drive shaft with two blades. As material goes down the shute the blades chew it up and it exits the discharge pipe. If the waste is too wet and green it can compact and you have undo a load of bolts to get to the block to clear it out. That is why branches feed so well the wood chips and leaves go through clean. These are not the best for general shredding.

I gave up on electric models many years ago and bought a 2nd hand petrol-driven one.
I agree with dewaltdisney that that is the road to go down.

Don't get one that has a spinning disc with two blades, they often block, get one with what I can only describe as sharp cogs, they chew things.
