Record woodworking vise
Hi
I have acquired a woodwork vise a Record No 52E, It is second hand and is missing the screws that hold the "soft jaws". They are not M8 so am assuming they are a BSW or UNC thread and being c/sunk I will have to order from somewhere.
Anyone give ma a clue as to size please?
TIA

You probably never found any information on line because you have spelt "vice" wrong.
I did look on line there are several sites offering information about them. (Also YT videos)
Good luck.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

The front jaws are held on with woodscrews. The back one are Whitworth IIRC from when I fitted the jaws to mine.
Use a drill shank as a gauge to fit through the "minor diameter of the the thread, or measure it with calipers.

As said above though there seems to be plenty of info online.

Thanks Dave 54 for your helpful response. M8 goes in half a turn so I am going to work on the chart you sent a link for and go for 5/16th, I also have a screw that fits that also fits a 5/16th die but as it came from a 1969 Ford I assumed UNC. The fit however did not feel perfect.Dave54 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 12:31 pm The front jaws are held on with woodscrews. The back one are Whitworth IIRC from when I fitted the jaws to mine.

There is a lot of information on line both under Vice and Vise which is the US spelling but I was unable to find reference as to the thread size. Incidentally both plates have threaded holes.

According to my thread tables 5/16" Whitworth and UNC are the same pitch and major diameter. The form is a little bit different, UNC is a flat top on the threads, Whitworth is rounded. Again plenty of tables online.
I'd not be 100% sure of any particular thread being used on British motors back in the 60s! I'm sure I've come across oddities.
Are they door hinge fastening bolts you have? I seem to remember them being a coarse thread around that size.
Good luck with it. They're a good vice.

It has got some weird mixtures of threads on it to be honest.Dave54 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 7:30 pm According to my thread tables 5/16" Whitworth and UNC are the same pitch and major diameter.
