Hello all,
Just started a refloor/reskirt project. I'm working to a budget so reluctantly having to reuse the existing architrave.
I've completed one room with relative success however I came across an issue with the architrave. The skirting boards that I am fitting are 18mm deep, the architrave is about 10mm with a filleted edge. I dealt with this by putting an internal mitre on the skirt, placing this over the architrave and filling the gaps with caulk, it does the job but I want to up my game a bit!
Was recently in a friends house and noticed that whoever fitted their skirting board had scribed the rear surface such that it wraps around the architrave (see images below). Any thoughts on how this is done? I was thinking that maybe they used a router but hoping to avoid this if possible as I don't have one. I'll still have the issue of the skirts sitting proud of the architrave, I'll just have to get creative with this.
Any suggestions very much welcome.

Skirting Board Rear Surface Profiling
In your second pic, it looks like a quadrant moulding on the outside of the architrave: I would have chopped off the bottom of the quadrant and run the skirting up to the flat edge of the architrave, although in the normal course of events, I would expect the quadrant to be added after skirting, (if necessary, and it shouldn't be really).
In your situation with the different thickness, the simple option is to chamfer the front of the skirting, this is easily done with a block plane. If a chamfer would offend, a simple pencil round in the same place will also work, also achievable with a block plane plus a piece of scratch.

One day it will all be firewood.
