Building a media wall.
I've been asked to build something like this:
To be honest I don't really fancy doing it at this time of year but if I do I want to make it worth my while. The only thing I'm concerned with is using MDF for the fireplace due to the heat. Would I be best using plasterboard?
The joiner in the video charged £900 to build (Dec 2020) I'm thinking of charging £1200 (materials included) or is that taking the p*ss? As I said I don't really want to do it but worth doing it at that price.

Not an expert but I have done something similar for myself (without the fire) and would comment:
I doubt the fire generates any real heat as it's decorative, mdf ought to suffice, plasterboard needs skimming though.
What I learnt was that it took extremely careful planning and aforethought to get power, network, hdmi, satellite & aerial leads to the correct locations.
Having worked out, something like, 38mm CLS timbers (side on) for studs, 12mm p/board & 3mm skim, I bought several plastic enclosures with screw lids, say 50mm depth. I mounted these to the original wall over 3mm hardboard spacing plates in the required positions, also putting in noggins for the TV bracket mounts, etc.
Cabling ran into these boxes as necessary, put the lids on then the plasterer skimmed over them. I removed the now dirty lids to replace with clean ones, these boxes are not expensive.

Just a few points having fitted this type of unit, dont underestimate the weight of the TV, in the video it looks like its fixed, if its on a pull out swivel then it need to be very strongly mounted, also the Tv is mounted to high they will get a crick in their necks looking upwards, Tvs should be at eye level. The faux fire underneath as long as there is no heat given off it will be ok, modern Tv screens don't like heat, the sound bar should have really been at the top then the Tv could be lowered, as for quality of sound it doesn't really matter if it lower or higher than the Tv. As for cabling I have six cables running into the rear of the Tv they run through two lengths of trunking, form the Tv to my control cupboard which is 7 mts away, cables can break or malfunction, with my method I can pull a new cable through while pulling the knackerd one out, also use top quality cables I think all mine was about £400 but as said long runs.

I said I'd do it for £800. It looks easy enough but I don't really fancy it but worth it if I get it.

Missed this but I wouldn't of been shy about quoting your original figure or higher. Retail customers pay retail money, unless its family or a friend? Hope it goes well.

They said they're away on holiday and will get back to me when they return. That means they're going to shop around for a better deal and if they can't get a better price they'll come back to me. Some Polish guy will do it for half of that and make a right mess...probably.
