power failure on table saw
apologies if im in the wrong cat. i have a small modelling saw, power is going to the adapter with lights but nothing else!! is there a way to establish if its the motor or switch? the switch has been known to be temperamental at times. any advice would be great as i am not hot on this topic.

You will need a multi meter to take things further.
What is this "Adaptor"
Picture?

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Could be the switch , which should be a”NO VOLT” switch , if it is likely the switch coil has burnt out.
Just a thought does the motor start if you hold in the “ON” button , another clue if the motor runs for the problem being a no volt switch.
Possible the speed adaptor again fairly crude devices similar to those found on drills with leads, usual thing on motor for a failure is the field coils or armature assuming it’s a conventional power tool motor with brushes , but when they pack up it’s usually obvious , an induction motor will hum if the capacitor is shot.
Be careful poking around with a meter if your not experienced.

simbarb1, I am not being awkward it's just that it could be a variety of things and without a multi meter, and knowing what to look for, you would be better off buying a complete new modelling saw.
You could try to replace parts, but where do you stop? (Unless you know which part has failed, for which you need..........)

What you're asking is a bit like giving somebody a coloured ball in a dark room, and saying, "What colour is this?"
Make, type of saw, and photos of the saw and adaptor would all help.
As already said, a multimeter is needed to test things.
If the switch has been dodgy then I'd look at that first.

Yup.
And the make and model etc.
Might help some other person with the same problem some time.
