Help Identifying a Tool Set

Post by Cfarq80 »

I'm new to this site so apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place.

I am trying to identify what the tool is in the photo. It came from my grandfather's carpentry workshop.

Any ideas?

:welcomeuhm: Yes, you did hijack an old thread. I've split your post from the old thread.

Hopefully someone will be able to identify your old tools.

When I first looked I thought it was a bolt and firing pin from an old gun. Having said that, I cannot identify from which one??

That is interesting as we also found a ww1 bayonet. I will add some more photos tomorrow morning at different angles to show the movement of the lever.

Total guess I think it is the adjustment mechanism for a plane blade, so probably a "Box" plane :dunno:

The other thought I had was that is a leather punch used for shoe making. The guides set the punch hole in from the edge for repetitive holes. A few more pictures would help.

Certainly doesn't look anything like something from a weapon. The British army used the Lee Enfield 303 in WW1. I fired it a couple of times.

I have added more photos.

It has my great granddad's initials on the side like most of his tools so likely something woodworking related.

In response to a previous comment, he had a lot of old wood block planes.

I think you have it BA, I think it is a saw tooth set. Possibly for a large band saw blade?

Don't know what it's for, definitely not a saw tooth setter, but I can see how it works, maybe that will encourage further suggestions?

When the lever is raised, the central tooth is in line with the two lugs at the side.

In this position, the tool (flat brass plate side down) fits into a slot in the side of an assembled Whachamacalllit.

The lever is pressed and the tooth moves upwards to release an Oojamaflip that is pressed into the Whachacallit.

Similar to, but not, inserting the preloaded tool into a tin and popping the lid off.

when you look at is its heavy duty designed to apply a heavy force
it doesnt fix and push against another part as there is only one fix point, so all the work happens in that "V"
