20amp MCB for external socket

Hi,

I've had a double socket put in on it's own MCB for use with a Lay-Z-Spa hottub. Yes, I could have probably run a spur but may change for fixed tub in the future.

I'm no expert by any means, but the electrician has used a 20amp MCB for the double socket (only thing on the circuit).

I'm potentially thinking a lower value should have been used and wondered what people think as various calculations have put the required breaker size around 10-12amps. Surely a 16amp MCB would be better suited? Even the garage MCB is only 16amp.

Also, Im thinking of running some low voltage LED lights and a patio heater from the same double socket - does anyone advise against using a waterproof box with power strip from reputable brands and do you think that would warrant a 20amp MCB?

Happy to be educated and/or told to shut up and leave it to the experts!

So its a new circuit (England and Wales) did said electrician give you a certificate and a Part P compliance document?

Has the easy spa got a 13A plug on it?

As for more load - that rather depends on the cable size used ........

Yes, he’s currently working on the part p - it’s a new build so has asked for a copy of the original certificate - he mentioned he’s going to submit a photo of it and Ann updated cert should be emailed to me in a few days.

Yes to the 13amp plug on the end :)

Do you think I’m other thinking this and 20amp MCB is absolutely fine?

If the product has a 13A plug on it, then a suitable IP rated socket should be OK BUT I wouldn't plug a heater in the other socket at the same time.

Looking at the hot tub it says "Voltage: 220-240V~50Hz, 2,050W at 20°C, Class II" the important point is the class II, this means the items is not connected to the supply earth, this is good for items used outside, as the house earth is not always same as real earth, the same applies to lawn mower, patio heater, or other items.

A plug has a 13 amp fuse, so current wise no problems, personally I would use RCBO's rather than MCB and RCD, but as long as there is a RCD of some type no real problem.
