Damp proof work

Post by Deb04 »

Looking for advice, currently suffering with rising and penetrating damp building in the 1911 census been converted into flats I'm ground floor I do have problems with ground water and water pooling, also with rain walls are soaking wet to touch, aft 7 years the landlord has agreed to do work, plaster has blown paint is off skirting has rotted along with floors,
Originally it was hack render off damp proof fix cracks in outside etc
Now he's doing the 3 worst affected rooms, which is battening plasterboard with plastic membrane pinned on top and plastered no work on outside, work he says will take 3-5days also the fact the plasterboard will cure the damp as it causes a cavity where air will flow thru and dry and cure the damp also he claims by this work the flat will be a lot warmer even with heating full blast it rarely gets above 17c inside has anyone got experience of this? Will it work? Do I cut my losses and move? Is it a stopgap?

Moving will depend on availability and rent costs but it is certainly a consideration that I would look at given the circumstances. You seem to have put up with an awful lot and the damp environment is not good for your health. Test the market first and look for more modern properties where the building will hopefully be well insulated and damp free. It is an upheaval moving but comfort and health come first.

I see your predicament. One would hope that a Housing Association would do the job properly but these days most HA operations are run by inexperienced staff who have not got much of an idea about anything other than phone gazing. They will put jobs out to tender and they will believe what they want to believe to keep to budget and move on to the next job. Sadly this is how things have become as all the people who are any good are not working at an HA. In the old days, Housing was primarily under council control and they had a raft of experienced and knowledgable field staff who knew their job and got things done correctly. Now we are in the working from homeland goofing off era there is not a lot of hope for folk such as yourself getting the A Team in. I hope it all goes well for you.
