I use mini rollers, quick and necessary for water based paints as they go off quickly.

Like dwd I'll use rollers quite often. For actual brushes and sizes that can again depend on the job in hand . For the trim work you mention I tend to use something like a 2" or 2 1 /2" . For walls either a 3" or 4" for the cutting in. I have some smaller brushes and occasionally use a 1" . For my own house I've used a 1 /2" sash brush to paint the mouldings on doors ( white mouldings , grey or black on everything else) . I use a mix of Purdys , Hamilitons and a handful of brushes that have long since lost any makers name but work well and I'm comfortable with them.
A few weeks ago a customer had me painting railings and garden furniture with Rustoleum paint. That has some kind of cellulose thinner if I'm not mistaken so I brought a set of cheap brushes from Home Bargins and used them. The paint seems to hammer the brushes and it was much easier to just throw them away afterwards.

Cheapest ones I can find! But as @grendel will attest to, my painting isn't up to much!
