DWD at my age just waking up is a bonus, but as I tell my grandchildren’ birthdays are good the more you have the longer you live’ .
Just waiting for BigAl I’ll have one for you etc
Not been on here much poor wifey has had 2 major ‘woman’s’ ops in past two years, medivaced from a cruise in Narvik Sept last 5 days hospital 10 days convalescing in hotel before flight home. Thank god we had good medical insurance then major back operation April this year still recovering, now been told she wants new knee. Keep nagging her to do physio she does every day. I’ve also been diagnosed arthritis in one knee and hip but can still walk 10,000 steps everyday. Thanks for birthday wishes everyone. John

What an awful story John, it must have been a nightmare. Mrs Ds aunt is 83 and booked to go on a 4 month cruise. Her insurance was thousands and they only insured her for half the cruise cost. As fate would have it she was not well enough to travel and missed the ship. It took six months, umpteen letters, and confirmations for her to get £10k back which was only a few grand more than the policy costs. This was with Staysure, and we had a poor experience with them ourselves last year and this year I switched to All Clear who have a good reputation. Mrs D was not well enough to travel last July and cut a long story short we lost £2k as the claim got nowhere, they were effing useless. So I am pleased you got all the help you needed when you needed it most.

DWD we are with Nationwide paid supplements for all know medical conditions and could not have been more helpful organising hotel, assisted flights home from Narvik,taxis both ends etc. P & O crew onboard from medical staff to head of security were very organised and looked after my sister who completed the cruise. Sister spoke with daughter in tears saying “ I’ve left my brother in a strange place alone” daughter “ he’ll be OK he’s an ex Matelots been in stranger places than Norway. Ships crew helped sister pack our belongings, gave her free internet and phone calls if required and priority unloaded baggage at Southampton.
Food in Narvik was ‘long cooked reindeer leg’ didn’t know if it was a long leg or cooked for a long time, Halibut, burger or veggie option. Found library that had English books and a Costa type cafe for hot chocolate & snacks, shopping centre where I ‘borrowed ‘ a wheelchair Wifey was not in mood or fit enough to eat out often so found take outs for lunch Burger King evenings. Made an idiot of myself trying to use self ordering system asked Norwegian for help he just pressed the Union Flag for English Could not fault the hospital as they had rooms for relatives to stay in and free food from the patients canteen.
We laugh at it now as our holiday pics are of her operation scars.
As an ex RN Warrant Officer I was soon getting things organised hospital would let me print off all emails so I had hard copies of all correspondence , hotel booking, flights etc.
Shot through customs at all airports bypassing lots of queues only had carry-on each as P&O thought we would rejoin cruise however op was more major than first thought, make sure you have the Worldwide GHIC Card it was copied by hospital all bills paid by UK NHS.
Can’t have been that bad as she wants another cruise. We are going to Costa de la Isle of Wight September 20 mins down M27 to ferry.

Blimey what a story. I am glad you got through it okay. Yes, we both have the EHIC cards as we tend to stay in European territories but I will check the GHIC out. Mrs Ds father was a regular RN Chief Petty Officer who served on HMS Achilles and HMS St Kitts during WW2. The sea is clearly not in her blood as she always gets motion sickness on cruises so I have canned them after four. We went across on the Red Funnel ferry as foot passengers to the IOW and we walked up to Osbourne House. It took about 35 mins to walk as I was too mean to pay for a taxi, we were fitter then
