Which Mortar Mix

Post by Onar »

Hi,

I have removed material from the internal side of external brick wall.

What mortar ratio mix should I use, sand, cement, lime, etcetera, please?.

Alternative?.

Thank you.

Which Mortar Mix

Presumably you’ll want to at least try to match the mortar with what’s there now. So it’s no good anyone saying 4:1 red sand to cement without seeing the remaining stuff . You’ll need to examine it to see if the original is lime based . Normally it’s a little softer than a cement mix. In restoration one of the first things done on a job was a series of test mixes each carefully measured out by volume and allowed to cure for a while before choosing one . A lot of our work was with lime putty as most of the work was stonework . Sometimes crushed brick was added and on at least one occasion charcoal was added to mimic the years of pollution.
