1930's Hearth repair
I've had to remove the top layer of concrete from my hearth as it was heavily cracked. After removing the damaged slab i was faced with a reasonable area of what appears to be tarmac but also this deeper hole. The end of the exposed joist is rotten as is the timber it's sat on, I'm not sure about the opposite side as i've not exposed it yet.
The whole area looks like it was filled with rubble then covered in tarmac then concrete.
I going to replace the joist and timber support but can anybody advise how to fill the hole please? I guess concrete but how do I protect the timber as even when the perimeter bricks go back in the timber will still be exposed.
My plan is/was to self level the hearth then tile on top but the hole is obviously to deep for the self leveling compound.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
