How would you go about painting this room?

Post by Beav »

Hi,

we are looking at painting this room first in our project build we've just purchased.

There will be a larger radiator going back into the room as we are aiming to have gas central heating reinstalled.

I have read about using zinsser wallpaper cover up first as a primer then the desired colour on top? (I pressume that will act as a stain blocker as well?).

My concern is will the paint hide the line where the wallpaper border is horizontally across the wall as well as where the wallpaper stops/bare wall is shown? We will need to do some filling first as well on the wall especially where the old radiator used to be.

Also thinking of painting the brown doors white as well or the same colour as the wall. Not sure the emulsion designed or the walls will go on the brown doors ok? There's a similar property for the sale locally where they have left the door surround white but painted the storage cupboard doors the same as the wall which looks really good.

We may have to use Zinsser BIN or bullseye 1,2,3 on the ceiling first before doing it with white emulsion.

First thing is strip off the wallpaper, anything else is a bodge.

There will be wallpaper paste residue under. this needs clearing / scraping off, fill any dinks and sand smooth.

Give a coat of zinsser gardz. This will seal any residue.

Ceilings will just need cleaning with sugar soap (followed by rinsing) then paint with TRADE emulsion, start with the ceiling. then the walls. then the woodwork.

And NO emulsion onwoodwork.

IF you do go that route (not stripping) you will end up with visible lines where the border runs.

Stripping the paper is labourious, provided you take care then you shouldn't damage the plaster too badly. get a paper tiger (google) mix up warm water with fabric conditioner (honestly it works) and soak the paper. You'll need a wide stripping knife.

Honestly if you just go over the existing paper you WILL regret it.

The majority of the house is wallpapered :(

Would you advise to just gloss the brown storage cupboard doors white then?

It depends how much time/money you want to spend and desired end product. You may clean walls and ceiling, decorate fill sand and paint or remove wall paper and paint. It's your choice really, both will work and look much better than now. Use emulsion paint. The wallpaper looks well stuck, removing may be messy, painting over will look as good.

Sand, decorate, prime and paint with satin wood for wood works.

Would you say remove the border though?

Will most likely fill the hole then possibly remove the border and apply Zinsser wallpaper cover up then 2 coats of emulsion of our colour choice.

A bit concerned removing too much paper as it's a 70s build and don't really want to add plastering to the list of jobs.

70s houses were largely plastered out rather than the more common dry lining you see today. I would strip the wallpaper using chemical peel agents and a steamer. With the steamer hold the pan in place for a count of five to avoid blowing the plaster. You are just wetting it not steaming it off. Remove all traces of paste after and it will be good to paint over.

Thinking use Zinsser gardz once paper has been removed, before applying the emulsion?

Well, it protects against missed wallpaper paste being reactivated by the emulsion. It can create bubbles under and lift the top coat in places.

If the wallpaper is well-adhered, painting over it with emulsion paint can look great and save you the mess of removal. Alternatively, you can clean the walls and ceiling, fill, sand, and paint for a more polished finish. It really comes down to your budget, time, and the result you want — both options will make the space look much better!
