What is this cable?

To give you the actual answer we would need more information, anything else is just a guess.
1)Where was it?
2)What was it connected to
3)What is it doing now
4)Is it live

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.
If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

It was behind a skirting board. No idea what it was connected to and isn’t live. I’m trying to trace it back to something but wondering if someone recognised the kind of cable ie if it would be a data cable etc…

What is this cable?

Doesn't work like that, sorry.
Although there are regulations etc, it is up to who ever is installing a cable what they choose, and what to connect it to.
I have seen "speaker wire" (Used for speakers) used to power lights. Yes, it shouldn't be done, so to see it you would (but shouldn't) assume it's for a speaker.
The only real way is to find what it is connected to (If it is still there)
I could say it looks like a 6 core alarm cable, but that doesn't mean that it what it was used for.

What is this cable?
I understand that that could be the case and as you say, I won’t know for sure until I determine where it terminates. However, I’m wondering if someone can point to the likely uses this cable could have under ‘normal’ circumstances i.e. ‘it looks like the type of cable that would be used for an alarm’ or ‘it looks like a cable for data transference’ etc etc. That may help me trace it back
