scared to do a sytem restore cos ive deleted 8 trojans now over 2 days... should i go back a week and see what happens then?
No!
Have you any idea when those trojans got onto your computer, or even how they got there?
When did you clear the last traces of them? Was it before all this started?
Did you get the Windows updates and if so, did the problems start after that.

the nearest idea ive got is within the last week or so...
got windows undates ok, may or may not have been afer that, it installed something last night as i was switching it off and on again for the reinstall of the dongle.....

ive wiped limewire off this computer before and given it a good sweep through with the scanner but she's gone and downloaded it again and i suspect its the cause of the problems...

im gonna do another sweep through today and see if it picks anything else up...
still seeming a bit slow on startup but i dont know if thats anything to do with the new blackberry / ipod / sony ericsson stuff shes put on there..
logged on this morning and theres no sign of the 'gateway' icons yet... site popped up nice and quick..
so far so good :thumbright:
All my advice should be taken with a rather large pinch of salt, all the gear, absolutely no idea whatsoever ;)

The libtorrent connection is part of Limewire, so that's why the connection has gone since you uninstalled it. I've lost count of the number of people I know who've got their computers infected with malware by using Limewire and other P2P software. Ensure you've got Windows Update set to auto, then I would recommend installing Microsoft Update, which is a link on the Windows Update page. Then manually run a check to ensure that you've got all the critical updates. Next run a manual update of your anti-virus software to ensure the definitions are up to date, followed by a full virus scan. Do the same for your anti-spyware software if it's separate. If you've go the time I would run a scan with a couple of different anti-virus packages. Microsoft have a free online one http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm , but there are many others available.

well its had a trouble free day today from what i can tell, been no sign of the 'gateway' thing, 2 sweeps of webspider antivirus and spyware terminator with clam av have turned up clean sheets, and its booting up better now or seems to...
did i mention the other problem i was having prior? every time the young un was on the poota, i'd come back to it and when it booted up the clock had gone back to oct 13th 2005... wondering if that was a sneaky attempt by a virus to get round 'trial period' anti virus programs? fixed now anyway..
ive got everything turned on now, real time, web guard, startup checker the lot..

many thanks to dave and everyone for your help :thumbright:

Very coincidental but my birthday is Oct 13th but I had nothing to do with the date reverting back.

Give it a couple of days and if it is running without those problems and the scans are still clean, then purge your system restore points and set a new one. Thjat will prevent you acccidentally reverting back to a date when the virus (or whatever it was) was active and you start it up again.

Turn OFF System Restore then turn it back ON and then set a new restore point.

In XP:
Follow these instructions (method 2)
Then set a new restore point by following these instructions.

Bit of a late reply. Sorry to dredge up an old thread.
To stop your daughter from adding software you don't want on the computer, set a password on the account you use (Which will be an admin account meaning you can do anything you like)
Go to Control Panel, Users, click on your account name and set a password
Next back to the Users panel, create new user, give the account a name, and make sure the type is "limited" that should "hopefully" stop her installing too many troublemaking applications.
If I get the time I might be able to cook up a file, which can set some policies up to permanently block certain applications. Unfortunately at the moment I'm snowed under with decorating and renovations so might take a bit
