My next door neighbour used to have the free version of avast... complete rubbish, when he came knocking at the door (His browser had been Hi-jacked) he couldn't do anything with his machine (Windoze 8.1)

I downloaded the installation files for MBAM to a memory stick, whacked that in and it found (IIRC ) 98 viruses/trojans/pups.

Even after removing them I had to do a system restore to a point before he'd noticed the problem... then re-install MbaM and run it again..it still found another 60 odd problems (Even when you do a sys restore if there was something hidden it'll still be there..)

I find it useful to start windows in safe mode and run MBAM. Finds stuff it wouldn't in normal mode.

CCleaner is also a good program to run on a regular basis.

Have a look at https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

Also...this is a good process to run - ]https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-gb

CC cleaner is very good at what it does... removing Malware is not what it does though.
