yes i realize that i prefer the matching chips to battery method as no electronics or transmission losses hence the 2 or more in series to cover the battery output voltage

That was my original plan, I think the 12v chips just run too hot though.

you need a heat sink off at least 30 or 40 times the volume to dissipate the heat on a 10w led a bit less iff its not enclosed allowing airflow
i use about 8" bits off ally clamps as heat sink with with a "T" shaped bit off wood to hold in place and slide off
i used an old couple off these as they used to use thin ally that bent when heavily clamped

yes my idea was i used to get frequent powercuts [3 or 4 a year]
i had around 20 powertool batteries so with 4 or 5 well spaced led set ups would illuminate the house to a basic background level or the shed to a satisfactory 80% mains lighting level
with the 5 or 6 hand held worklights/torches also working off tool batteries to give full illumination where needed
as an aside with my experiments if you ignore battery costs charging up a tool battery and lighting up a 10w chip with the same chip in the light normally in the room if you take the total watts used to charge the battery and divide by the hours it runs for its actually about half the cost off the mains light at an average 80% off the brightness

The torch that came with the set was essentially nothing in my mind. It was part of a 3pc set, drill saw and torch. I bought it for the drill saw and batteries, the torch was an added bonus I didn't expect to use but I actually find it quite useful. If I am out and about working then I always have the tools with me, so now I always have a torch too, it's also good around the house for general jobs, power tool batteries are always around in the workshop and always charged so I always have a torch to hand, it's great for rooting through the loft cupboards or looking under the sink. I have many other torches that use "normal" batteries but I can't always guarantee they will be charged and ready to go for a quick job or they are designated to specific tasks, such as glovebox light, key chain light, rifle light or the torch I keep in my coat pocket for going out at the night.

yes the worklight is perhaps 50% bigger and heavier but still fits in a pocket so is my illumination off choice every time

the little torch came with a 200+ page instruction manual

well got the 4ah battery wednesday
full charge takes exactly 90 mins at an average charge off 43.45w[read every 10 mins] input so an hourly equivillent rate off 65w
turned it on high at 11am still going strong at about midnight when i fell asleep in the chair
anyway turned it on today on low at 1400 so will let you know somewhere 1300-1500 tomorrow how it goes
