Hi All,
I have just moved in my first home and have removed tiling from a non-functional chimney and want advice on plastering it, so it can be painted. While removing the tiles from the bottom I found some sort of an insulation or a board(it seems to be soft foam like), I'm unsure how to replace that or what should be done about it. Should I buy the same thing(after the identification) and put at the bottom ? How should I plaster/join it? I have attached a picture to illustrate the above.
I am very new to all of this so would appreciate if somebody can help me out to find the easiest way to accomplish this.
Thanks in advance

Plastering a non-functional chimney
Thank you big-all :) It's an actual chimney which goes all the way up and it's closed from the top I think with vents. There is some space in the chimney opening for it to breath.
I am planning to keep the indent and plaster it over so I can paint it with the same colour as the wall. Is it possible to use gyproc instead of plaster in this case ?

Plastering a non-functional chimney
The flue might need sweeping.
Is the flue open at the top of the chimney stack - through ventilation from the fireplace to the stack is always needed in redundant flues.
If you have trouble scraping the old tile adhesive off then you will have to hack off the plaster back to brickwork and re-plaster as a patch plaster.
You can use whatever you want but powder plastering might be the easiest way to match up.
