Cornice repair

Post by SamRad »

Hi guys

Hope you're all well.

Spot of DIY in the bedroom removing some fitted wardrobes. Unfortunately the installer must have damaged the coving.

Any recommendations on how best to go about repairing it? Putting jn free standing wardrobes so won't be covered. Photo attached.

Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

It is made with plaster of Paris which sets quickly. You need to form a shaper to get the profie just before it hardens. Have a look at this that gives you the basics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_iU-rSuIjE

remove the remainder of the old wardrobe.
shape a piece of tin for a template of the moulding.
painters tape on the flat surfaces around the damage.
wet down the patch - a light dash of Pva will help.
mix a little gypsum(not skim) with a handful of cement to a soft mix. or just plaster no cement.
build up the missing bit in layers and let it just go proud.
run the template gently along to get the plaster profile.
as it firms up a light touch with damp sponge will smooth things out.
when dry sand smooth - including the old join ridges you can see.

I've not used one myself for corniche but would one of those profile gauges that you see be any good in this situation?

The Barman says, "I'm sorry, we don't serve time travellers". This time traveller walks into a bar.
