Adding surround to stove
Hi, we're looking to add a stone surround to our existing stove. We'll also bring the stove forward into the room. All materials used during the install will be non-flammable.
3 images attached
Picture of stone surround (will be repaired)
Existing stove installation
Cardboard template showing where new surround will sit
Questions:
1. Can you see any problems with this plan? Do we have enough clearance between the stove and the surround?
2. Hearth will be replaced. I believe it needs to come 300mm forward from the (new) position of the stove. Is that correct, and anything else I should allow for?
Am trying to contact our normal stove guy, but he's hard to get hold of. In the meantime, internet advice would be very welcome.

Adding surround to stove
no expert here
you may be limited by the angle or level pipe you have to introduce
you may also find you have to protect from heat further than you think with the architrave or woodwork on the left hand side coming close i simply dont know

Thanks. Yes, think you're right about the offset pipe to move the stove forward, there will be a limit, I'll do some more reading on this.
As for skirting board, we didn't have the stove installed, but it has been safety checked since we bought the house and it wasn't raised as an issue, so I think it's ok. Adding the stone surround will mean flammable materials are further away.

I can see a range of issues regarding your proposal.
Perhaps its best not to proceed without a HETAS advising you or doing the work.

also worth mentioning there are 2 ways to get this job done
one is via a hetas installer who will install or part install and certify that it complies and issue a compliance certificate
the other route is via building control
this requires you to involve them before work commences work in accordance to there requirement including fitting to comply with building regs and they will test it often via a third party but all at your cost

Thanks for the replies regarding HETAS. As in original post, I am trying to get our normal HETAS approved stove guy to come and have a look, but he's flat out at the moment so I'm just trying to get an idea of potential issues. In the background, I also have a stonemason waiting for the go ahead to repair the surround, and I would like to be able to give them a better idea if the job is going to go ahead.
Having confirmed that final installation of the stove will be done by a HETAS approved engineer, any further comments on potential problems that people have spotted will be gratefully received.

Only a thought, but most cast iron stoves are designed to have either top or rear flue on installation, with a plate fitted over the other outlet. So you might be able to bring the stove forward, convert to rear outlet (so your existing flue remains in same place) and move the blank plate from the rear to the top.
If you can get the screws undone. (Warm them up with a blowtorch).
If you are capable of doing the stove/flue metal work yourself, Building Control is the way to go, it isn't rocket science.

you really need to sort this out with a specific hetas engineer as he wont simply connect the stove unless it complies
you can do it according to what you/we/ the bloke down pub thinks but iff he wont connect it its pointless and indeed may cost you more as he has to adapt what you have done to comply

Thanks, this is a good point, particuarly if we end up moving the stove significantly forward into the room. Have checked, and yes there is a rear outlet if we need itarco_iris wrote: ↑Thu May 20, 2021 7:25 am Only a thought, but most cast iron stoves are designed to have either top or rear flue on installation, with a plate fitted over the other outlet.
