Circular hole in MDF bookcase

Post by Loreless »

Have next to no experience with this kind of thing, so asking for some tips.

We have an old bookcase that we want to add our Sky box to. The back panel is very thin (~1cm) and feels like MDF. What would be the best way to insert a fairly large hole into it to feed through the cabling?

My best guess from the research I've done is probably using a holesaw after lining both sides of the panel with protective tape. No idea if that's right though as I worry about the panel holding up under any kind of force.

Photo below, we want to add our box to the bottom shelf. Any help welcomed, thanks!

Yes Go easy from inside to out, not sure the tape would help it might clog the teeth, perhaps outside of the cutting area.

Lay it on its back on a block of wood to give support and a drill through.

Since you only get one chance with a hole saw, why not try it on an off cut first, and then see will the plug fit through the hole.

Also if you are going to put it at the bottom, drill from inside to out, you don't want to drill from outside to in to find out you are too low and hit the bottom shelf.

Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.
