How to protect a palm tree against frost using garden fleece/mesh?

Post by pjontheroadagain »

I've been advised to protect the leaves of a newly planted palm tree from frost and winter winds using garden fleece/mesh.

However, I'm unsure how to wrap the leaves and how many layers I need to give them sufficient protection without blocking out the sunlight.

Should I wind it loosely like a bandage or perhaps sew it into a bag to place over the top of the tree and tie around the trunk? And how many layers would I need?

The mesh is 1.6-metres wide by 5m long, so I've got plenty to work with!

2 layers, tied (not too tightly) around the trunk

What type of "Palm" tree is it? what are your winter lows? where are you? how big is it? some "Palm" trees are frost hardy to -5 and below, some will die of at +3/4. You need to protect the leaves not so much the trunk, but as said it depends on the size, a large trees trunk will not need covering, but the leaves will, sorry need more info.
