Video editing software

I am looking for recommendations for video editing software, I expect to have to pay for it, but I was wondering do any of you use any video editing software?
It's only for YT, yes I know YT has editing tools, but I am looking for something a bit more, don't use it too often, so I don't want a "pay monthly" thing, I want to buy it out right.

Windows (what version) or OSX (what version)
I used Windows Movie Maker a few years ago (free i think and would have been on Windows 7 , as I did not goto windows 10 for a while).
Not really used windows 10, now retired and nolonger do this sort of support as a hobby
The local church had a load of children over from Cheonoble and various members took videos of all the events over 2 weeks I was asked if i could combine, and edit a video for them to take home.
I used Windows movie maker added captions , free Music , and effects/transitions it worked very very well.
I was offered money for any software i may need by the church, but this worked well and was free

Since having a Mac on OSX , i tend to use iMovie now again free , and works OK

There are a lot of free software packages out there that are as good as anything you can get professionally (paid-for) but it's a minefield of choice.

In the Linux world there is far more choice and, imho, better quality stuff as the whole principle is open-source as opposed to the money market that is Windoze. In respect to Linux (something you should give good consideration to - you can run it from a USB stick without affecting your Windoze PC at all) there are at least 10 great options with a package called Kdenlive being one of the best.

Hi, I have a small DIY Youtube channel and I use FilmoraX for video editing. I find it a very simple and fast video editing software in the free version there are already many basic tools that allow you to edit amateur videos. I then pay a small annual fee that allows me to have more tools.
I also like it because if you don't edit 4K videos it doesn't require very demanding hardware. I know I made it clear as I use a translator.

Hi, as a Mac user I used iMovie but as my Macbook was out of date I needed a simple editor which I know can be used on Windows as well. It is Openshot Video Editor and it is free. Lots of videos on Youtube for the basics.

I use Adobe premiere Pro, I have two computers for editing, so I had to buy it twice. The first time I bought a CD from a seller on eBay (genuine copy), but obviously you can only use this on one computer. My computer was built in 2009 by myself, but I tried editing 4K videos and my computer was struggling, so I splashed out and spent £4500 on a dedicated machine, so I had to buy another copy of Adobe Premiere Pro, this time it was amazingly difficult, because Adobe has started a subscription model (part of the World economic forum - by 2030 you will own nothing and be happy model). Luckily, I managed to find a genuine copy for sale on eBay of an older version, which could still edit 4K, but it cost about £600

I tried windows move maker once, but found it difficult to use. I’m sure there are some free options out there!

If you are not editing HD or 4K footage, you might be able to use an older version of Adobe Premiere pro. I know a guy that used a “dodgy” copy of Premiere Pro, but he had to edit his .hosts file on his computer to stop Adobe from connecting to their server, or it bombs the program out and stops it from working.

Obviously, as a law abiding citizen, I do not condone doing such things

I think my old computer, which I'm typing this on now was about £1200 just for the parts in 2009. This computer has been super reliable and the only thing I have replaced is the PSU.

The PSU was a OCZ, it died almost 3 years after I purchased it, and you have guessed it, the PSU almost died exactly to the day, but they sent out a replacement free of charge! That is what you call service!
Obviously I'm a big OCZ fan now

Technology has moved on since then, but even the new computer struggles with 4K files, as they are typically 4X the size of HD files, on top of that, YouTube only supports HD- not 4K

I thought I'd spend the extra money to have the computer built by professionals for a change, instead of me building it.

Guess what happened?

In the first few weeks, it would not boot up and I feared the motherboard was caput, I contacted their support (Scan in Bolton). The support was very good on the phone/email, but at the time I was working shutdown and had to go over one day after work (at their request). I walked in with about 20 minutes to spare before they closed, the guy behind the counter was shaking his head at me and looking at his watch, there was a sign behind this dude, along the lines of "WE WILL NOT TOLORATE THREATS OR ABUSE OF ANY OF OUR STAFF". Needless to say that I was not happy and asked for the guy that I had been emailing, he turns up with a technician and the job was fixed in about 10 minutes

The guy that I had been dealing with was sound, he even said that his dad watches my videos

But they didn't used to. The first one is 4k, but the one from 6 years ago isn't 4k (or HD)

YT has supported 4K for a couple of years now @60 fps.

I was given an older version of Premiere by - someone who will remain nameless lol

I got a newer version because the rendering process is massively speeded up if using a graphices card with cuda cores on it and I had a pair of old GTX 680's, (good back then) with lots of cores.

Two years later whilst playing through the menus I noticed that hardware acceleration was greyed out and I had to download a different driver for Premiere.

A ten minute 1080p video that took an hour to render dropped to 8 minutes with the cards doing most of the work. What a berk lol!!

You have been able to upload 4K to YouTube for years, I think the last one I uploaded was in 2018

I’m sure I used to get a warning on upload, along the lines of “4K files will work, but are not supported”.

Because of all the hassle with the file sizes, time to render a video and the fact that most people watch YouTube on a PC/Laptop/mobile device, I switched back to HD

4K has been on YouTube for several years. It's becoming more mainstream now as 4k monitors and TVs have come down in price a lot (I have both!).

I use Adobe Premiere for video editing but it has a monthly subscription. Davinci Resolve is a good free alternative. Has enough features for most people if not for professional editing.

You can download Davinchi or OpenShot. Both these are free professional video editors.
