Big hole where pipes are

Post by BeeBee »

Hi

Can anyone help me. I have a hole in the wall showing old pipes from boiler. I’m not sure how to deal with it.
Do I trying and put plasterboard just over whole (how would I do this)
Or try and cover whole wall.

I am a complete novice so would need talking through it all.

I’ll try and attach a picture and would very much appreciate any help I could be given.

Probably the easiest way is to plasterboard over it, you only need an offcut and sometimes you can buy broken boards at merchants that will suit. I cannot see too clearly in your photo if this a straight run or a corner. You need to fit something to mount the board on and this can be some wood of the right thickness to space the board flush to the wall. You might also be able to glue on some lips to the underside to fit the filling board to. A lot will depend on what tools you have and if you have a basic idea so we can guide you through it. There is a builders adhesive called Sticks like sh*t that will be your friend here https://www.screwfix.com/p/evo-stik-sti ... 90ml/22070

Hi. Thanks for your quick response.

The open area starts at the corner of the room.

So I understand that you are saying if I get some strips of wood, if correct thickness and attach to wall, then attach plasterboard to wood strips. Does this adhesive work for both wood onto concrete then plasterboard to wood? I’m assuming I’d then need to skim over the top.

What are lips? And is this as well as the wood or instead off.

Thank you.

You stick some plasterboard 'lips' around the inside edge of the hole so you have a surface to glue the plasterboard to. The blocks of wood will act as a spacer and a stiffener to stop the board from bowing or splitting if knocked. That adhesive I linked will stick the wood and the plasterboard it really does stick well and it is water and damp proof. You will need a sealant gun to use it, only a couple of quid.

Well done, as it was your first attempt at a job like this you made a good effort. If you want to hide the join line a bit more get hold of some fine surface filler and rub it into the joint. Wait about 10minutes to start to dry and use a bit of wet kitchen roll to smooth it out and paint over when dry. However, it does not jump out so it is personal choice. Pat yourself on the back :thumbright:

It was difficult to get it flush as the pipes protruded slightly. I’ll have a go and see if I can sort the edges. Thanks.
