Hi guys,

Just hoping for some advice on how to proceed. I’ve just bought my first house and was planning on doing a quick paint job in the spare room. I noticed some cracks in the surface of the wall and it sounded hollow underneath.

I started to peel off what appears to be paper that’s been painted over and have found this: see attached pic.

It appears to be black mould?

Do I need to just rip all the top layer off, treat the mould and then repaint? Or will it require something more?

Difficult to tell from the pics but that looks like a thick thermal wallpaper. Probably used to solve the mould problem in the first place.

If you clean the mold off is there paint on the wall surface?

Mold forms due to condensation coming in contact with a cold surface. In that case you might want remove the paper and clean the wall with a bleach solution to kill the mold first and after that you could paint with an anti-fungal paint Zinsser perma white. There maybe coloured version available.

I bet that room is cold so personally, after the above I'd line the walls with a thermal paper at a minimum or better still 25mm kingspan/celloex with foil to tape the edges and joins and then plasterboard over. It may seem a lot of work but a competent DIYer could do it or a dryliner/joiner in a day. That'll solve the mold issue and make the room warmer.
