There is a plasterboard cover/protrusion in the ceiling of a bathroom. The metal angle bead is showing through along an edge above the shower. Whether or not it's supposed to be stainless, I can't say, but it is original and is now rusting. Trouble is, how does one cover it when the ceiling/walls are emulsioned?
I'm presuming trying to sand and treat the rust will need an oil-based treatment/paint, which could make keying the emulsion tricky. Maybe there are proprietory products out there I could use?
One thought is to cover it with plasterer's corner tape and bed it in with filler, so it can be over-painted.
Any other suggestions?

Emulsion paint over rust?
Post by London mike 61 »
Without any photos to see what exactly the problem is I would sand the rust away and give the area a couple of coats Zinsser cover stain https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... IPwVuxU2Gz then a coat or two of emulsion.

Emulsion paint over rust?
Thanks for the suggestion, London mike 61. As I wrote the post, I realised a photo would have been worth a 1000 words (as the song goes). However, I'll have a look, though it's not exactly the cheap option.

If you have any oil based undercoat knocking about you could get away with that , if not then just rub down and keep painting with emulsion every so often . It’s your choice.

Emulsion paint over rust?
If you have some phosphoric acid or some other acid around paint it on to dissolve the rust as much as possible. You really want a nice air tight and water tight seal around the clean metal if possible, so any oil based metal paint or stain block should be okay. Oil gloss might work? never tried it. The other thing you might be able to do is to cut it out with a multitool and then fill and paint as normal.

I rubbed it down then covered it with that thick paper tape and filler. If it doesn't work the materials are cheap enough and I'll strip it down and try again with either phosphoric acid and/or oil paint.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
