Electric Vehicle Run-around

Post by petedln »

Hello everyone,

First of all I am not certain whether I should place this query here, in the electric section, in the tools section or on this handyman forum at all (but I have used these forums many times and always had great help!)

So apologies if this seems in the wrong place.

Basically I am looking for advice/ideas relating to buying a small electric run-around vehicle.

Quick bit of background but basically I live in a small village in which all of the ten houses or so are owned by family members, within the village there are also a couple of family businesses and a stable and a few barns etc. Across the spread of the village we are all connected by a series of maze-like pathways and tracks. I frequently find myself schlepping myself, two children and various items back and forth across various domains in the village.

So I thought that a little electric vehicle for hopping on and driving around and carrying items and children would be ideal!

However I don't know what exactly will cover my demands...

My first thoughts were a golf cart or a quad bike with a trailer. But are there any other ideas out there? Basically I would be looking for something that is quicker than walking pace but doesn't need to be racing me around, can carry a few bin bags worth of stuff, is electric (because I'll never keep it fuelled) and is not massive or extremely expensive. It also doesn't need to be road legal.

Any ideas on the kind of thing I would be looking at?

Thanks!

if its on the public highway it needs to be road legal [tax mot lights etc]
or somthing like a mobility scooter with a limit off something like 8 miles an hour for pavement use
and the public highway includes path foot paths roads
we are all ------------------still learning

A friend of mine runs a caravan/camping site (as does another acquaintance of his) and they both make heavy use of golf carts to do general maintenance and scoot around. If you buy one figure on spending around a grand (minimum) on one and check it has good batteries and a decent charger and take good care of the batteries. A new set of batteries can easily cost more than the buggy......

As for 'fuelling' - if you are capable of forgetting to fill a fuel tank (on a quad) you're just as likely to forget to plug the charger in. In which case - if your neighbours/customers aren't rabid green fanatics - a quad will work just as well.
Don't take it personally......

Apologies, should just clarify.

Doesn't need to be road legal as it's all just private land etc.

I would prefer electric because of the convenience of just plugging it in in the garage. I know that if I need to fill up jerry cans for fueling etc. I'll just end up not doing it or running them till empty!

Don't suppose you can afford a John Deere Gator TE?
48 volt, 8x6V batts, charger on board.

Unfortunately I think it would be a bit much, cost, size and power-wise for my needs.

But a few people in the surrounding area have one of these and seeing them zip around is what gave me the idea!
