does emulsion magnolia have different shades? pls help

Post by Mazonas »

I have walls that originally were painted with magnolia emulsion wall paint. Recently I had to sort out some cracks and other spots that needed re-painting. I bought some cheap magnolia emulsion wall paint and tried to re-paint certain spots. After drying, the spots with new paint, are much lighter than the original wall paint... and the difference is easily visible. Actually it looks more like white colour instead of a magnolia. Where could be the problem?
Poor quality paint? Or maybe it will get darker as years pass by?
I always thought magnolia is magnolia... and all magnolia would look same.
No matter what, I need to find the best solution in this case... and what is the best thing to do in this case. I am definitely not thinking to re-paint entire walls because of that.

Sorry to disappoint you ... each brand of emulsion whether that's johnstones/dulux/wilcos own et al will have different pigments and will therefore be different colours.

Your only sensible option is a coat of whichever brand over the entire wall.

Trade paint may well cover in one coat. Retail may take 2 or 3 coats.

An update: just found out that original paint was vinyl matt magnolia... and my newly used paint for re-painting certain spots was emulsion magnolia as stated earlier.

Will it make any difference if I buy vinyl matt magnolia of a random brand? Or is it better to get the same brand as original wall paint?

Even though colour batch variation in the paints will cause matching problems the biggest issue is that the wall colour will change over time through house dust and ageing. For example a car panel being sprayed has to be blended into adjoining panels the factory colour code might be spot on but the ultaviolet effect on the exiting paint will effect a variation.

With white you can get away with it to a degree but it is aways best to paint the wall to get to a line break. Whilst you are doing one wall you may as well do the room as you have all the gear out.

It never, ever works to "touch up", even if you have the original tin, due to what wine~o & DWD have said. Different brand, even worse.

Repaint the WHOLE wall with any brand, the change will be in the corners and less noticeable.

Better still, as above, do the whole room - after all, you've just bought the paint. Get on with it, doesn't take long.
