Landline is dead
Post by Distorted Vision »
My BT landline is dead. We have a BT NTE5 Master Socket. I've disconnected the faceplate and connected a phone into the test socket.
Still dead. It won't receive incoming calls.
Is there anything else I can try? BT charge £85 for an engineer's visit.
Many thanks!

BT don't charge unless the fault is inside the users premises i.e. something that 'you' did. Report the fault and let them fix it.
Don't take it personally......

I don't have broadband with BT only a landline. I called from my mobile and did an automated line test which passed, hence my original post.

The BT landline test should not be relied upon, as you have proven. BT will always say there is a charge because they often get called out for "silly things" As kellys_eye said they will charge you IF the fault is on YOUR side of the socket, call them, there is nothing else you can do.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

BT are supposed to charge for internal faults, however open reach changed our master socket which had corrosion on the connections which was causing a similar fault. Befriend the engineer with a cup of tea.

Sorry to say, but that is not true.
The BT master socket, belongs to BT, any problems with it, you do not pay. Yes cups of tea do go down well with all trades, but it did nothing regarding not receiving a bill.

IDo you have a voltmeter and know how to use it? Remove the faceplate of the master socket with nothing connected at the two cables coming in from BT there should be around 50volts dc, normally B is positive A is negative. If there is voltage present fault is probably your wiring!
Growing old is compulsory, growing up is not!

Sorry, what is the point of that?
We already know the line is dead, and you can have voltage on the line but no tones. (Seen that on quite a few occasions)Distorted Vision wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 10:21 pmMy BT landline is dead. I've disconnected the faceplate and connected a phone into the test socket.Still dead

BT engineer visited yesterday. Our new neighbours are having a block paving driveway installed and the workers have accidentally damaged BT's cable and its affected 3 neighbouring properties as well.
