I have recently built a pergola and decking area in my garden using timber. I am now wanting to paint everything grey, to match the fence panels and general style of everything else in my garden.
Whenever I go to look at what paint is available online and read reviews, they generally keep saying the same thing that after a short amount of time, the paint starts to crack and then looks awful. Meaning you have to sand things down and re-paint. I don't have a problem doing a new coat every year to keep on top of things, but it's the cracking that concerns me and looks like more maintenance than I was expecting. Is there any type of paint I could use, that is recommended for this? I know that stains will be better for this, but I do prefer to paint an actual solid colour. I assume getting anti-slip paint would be best too, based on the fact the decking will be painted too?
Any help of any brands that you recommend and would serve these needs would be hugely appreciated. Or just any general advice.

Paint for garden decking & pergola

There are two basic types of finish oil based and waxy types. The oil types are more of a preservative and sink into the wood as well as giving water resistance, the waxy types do not penetrate and lay as a protective cover on the surface. You might need one type for the pergola and a different one for the decking. I used the waxy one on a small section of decking in some garden steps and I have to do that yearly as it gets track worn. It is no hardship as it is easy to splash on. I like Sadolin products and this tinted option might be worth considering https://www.sadolin.co.uk/?s=decking

Deffo avoid paint for the decked area, just a wood stain/preservative. Coloured if you must but I prefer a more natural look.

I've had a look at Sadolin and I am wanting a grey colour, to go with the grey fence panels that I have but it doesn't look like the oils have a grey finish (that I could see) - any other suggestions?dewaltdisney wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 2:54 pm I like Sadolin products and this tinted option might be worth considering https://www.sadolin.co.uk/?s=decking

Grey is already on its way out. It will be replaced by shades of green as the next "big thing" so, by selecting grey now, you run the risk of the decking looking out of date fairly quickly.craigfarrall90 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 7:21 pm I've had a look at Sadolin and I am wanting a grey colour, to go with the grey fence panels that I have but it doesn't look like the oils have a grey finish (that I could see) - any other suggestions?
As wine~o suggested, a natural look will stay looking good and "in fashion" for a lot longer than a grey finish.
