It’s an active fireplace which we use, but the bricks on the ground take up so much of the living room.
Can I remove the ones at the front so it takes up less of the living room?
Are there any regs that say I should not?
Is it 16inches from the start of the fireplace opening (ie where the bricks go vertical) that I need to leave? Or 16 inches from the start of the black iron fireplace (which would include 1 later of extra bricks)?
Or is it not 16 inches at all?
Please help !

You don't state if this is an open fire but it looks enclosed; I think the 16" rule you have read is from a USA spec. Take a look at this, it should produce a pdf which is a bit big to attach, but can be downloaded; the second link is for Cosy Stoves.

Left hand side: 300mm out, plus 150mm either side, raised above surrounding floor.
