Adhesive recommendation

Post by PeteW1959 »

Hi,

This is my first post, please be gentle!

I am looking for an adhesive to attach a 6mm thick pine edging onto the edge of 18mm ply.

I do not want to pin it as no matter how carefully you fill the holes they still show under varnish. There is no way to clamp the edging to allow PVA to dry (it is a plywood built-in furniture carcass).

In the past I have used Evostik contact adhesive which works well, but my family are sensitive to the fumes and I'd prefer to use something less noxious.

I have considered various 'grab' adhesives (e.g. CT1, Soudall) but not sure if they would hold 1200mm of edging in place horizontally until fully cured.

TIA

Just a standard high quality PVA wood glue. Use masking tape to "clamp" in place while it dries.

I have used PVA as R suggests and it worked well. You need to clamp it well and masking tape can be augmented with those luggage straps to pull it os tight. To increase the gluing area you can rebate the trim and the edge, it helps it sit right but it is a faff to do if you have not got a table saw or router table. I have used Gorilla glue in the past but the foaming expansion can cause issues. PVA is the safest but be patient for it to dry and cure.

yes patience is a virtue you get 5 min and 30 min d4 glue from toolstation and other outlets those times are when clamped, and you have a microfilm left in the space whereas taped will be a more generous film so give it 10 times the time suggested[minimum 2 hrs]before removing the tape and a further day to harden and if its sub 8 degrees double the taped uptime
annnnd if you dont have any planned woodwork within the next two years it gradually goes off after a year so dont get say a 1L bottle and only use a quarter

Thanks guys, I'll give PVA and masking tape a go. At least if it doesn't work it is reasonably easy to sand down and try again!

These are like the ratchet-type tapes I use, I bought mine at Poundland many years ago. https://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke- ... lsrc=3p.ds I have used them for loads of different jobs over the years.

Bingo! Masking tape and PVA worked.

What I think helped was the PVA I had was about 3 years old and was quite thick; it worked a bit like a grab adhesive!
