I'm looking to convert part (not all) of my double garage in a new build - developer permission and building regs agreed.
My question is on the attachment of the ceiling timber to create a new partition wall - the image attached is a cross section of the ceiling in the garage.
This is the wording on the plans provided by the builder:
"GARAGE CEILING TO RECEIVE 200MM ISOVER SPACESAVER INSULATION WITHIN FLOOR VOID, UNDERDRAWN WITH 1 No LAYER OF 12.5MM GYPROC FIRELINE BOARD (9.8KG/M²), PERIMETER OF FIRELINE BOARD TO BE SEALED WITH INTUMESCENT MASTIC, FURTHER UNDERDRAWN WITH 1 No LAYER OF 93MM THERMALINE PIR INCORPORATING 12.5MM PLASTERBOARD WITH VAPOUR CHECK"
My question is how do I attach my timber to the ceiling:
Long screws (150mm - 200mm) to get through to the joist above OR;
Cut a section out the ceiling then attach the timber to that?
Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I think I would cut a channel through the existing ceiling where the wall is to be. I would screw a wall plate to the ceiling joist and sandwich the fire break material. I would check with the building inspector first so you do not waste time. It would give a strong fix for the wall that way. Can you plot where the most convenient joist is?

Yes - handily the joists have been marked on either side of the walls
