automatic updates

Post by ultimatehandyman »

Be warned, yesterday my computer updated itself and installed updates. The computer said it would install them on shutdown.

I shut down and the next day I could not get onto the internet :angryfire:

I restarted the pc and tried again and still could not get online.

Then I went to Add/Remove programmes, clicked on the checkbox to show installed updates and the day before a security update had been installed by microsoft. I removed that and then could get back online.

If anyone else can't get online after updates you will know why

My system self-installed that and I could not get into various websites

OK after a couple of reboots - at least for the time being, but not impressed :cussing:
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I think as Hoovie said, after an update yesterday it may have overwritten one of my Sony programs :angryfire:

Microsoft Update KB951748, which was part of the malicious software removal tools caused a few problems for those still crazy enough to run zone alarm thinking it does anything other than block access to ports in a blind manner and call itself 'security'

This is a zone alarm issue and they have issued a warning and workaround.

Zone Alarm generally does a decent job if you've ever run a 'shields-up' test to check.

However, I had 3 customers yesterday who all lost their internet connection after this update and all had ZA installed.

You can't just blame ZA though can you? It's not them that released the MS update.

Comodo firewall is much much better than Zonealarm but if you want a firewall that does the same with a lot less popup notices, especially when installing software, use PCTools Firewall Plus which is what I use, very good.

I used to use Zonealarm free but its gone down hill a lot recently if you're in vista you'd be better off using the inbuilt firewall.

ZonaAlarm used to be good and maybe the best, but it does break a few rules which have been exposed as Windows Updates have been coming through.

Like Asinine, I used to use ZoneAlarm but no longer
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

going to take the advice & bin zone alarm
i have another problem though, at every startup, i get an error message {windows live messenger, installer, error code 2771}
it's stopping me install anything else as, according to windoze, i already have another installer program running & should shut that down first but i cant stop it :cb
