Damp course/render

Post by johntb »

Hi There. Whilst repairing some external render to the side of the house I have rendered over the visible black beading of the damp course. The house is of brick construction with a cavity and was built in 1910. At the foot of the wall is block paving driveway on a slope so it drains well. Should I try to chip away the new render to expose the beading again or will I be safe to leave it and paint it over it?

I have a low external wall opposite with no damp course and do not have any problems with damp.

Many thanks.

Any replies, please post them here :thumbright:
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It is be a good idea and good prctice to take the render up above the physical DPC. The neatest way of doing this, now that you have established the DPC level, is to fix a batten to the wall and cut a straight line through the render with a chaser. You will then be able to remove the render below the chase, leaving a tidy finish.
