Tiling over tiles - what to use?

Hi all

Im just about to tile the bathroom in our first house.

We had to leave the old tiles on the wall (in parts anyway) as the tiles were bedded in concrete so almost impossible to remove

So we have now come to tiling over these tiles, I understand that normal PVA doesnt cut it so my question is should we just tile over using normal tile adhesive or is there special adhesive for this purpose

Any answers appreciated..........I really dont want these to start falling off in a year or two

If you do a search you should find similar requests. I think you need to add sand to the PVA then apply to the tiles and let it completely dry before adding the new tiles. The experts will put me right if I've got it wrong

skiking those directions were for skimming over tiles, not for tiling over tiles, best wait for a tiler to comment as you said!

Normal tile adhesive will be fine, but you may struggle getting the new tiles level, if some have been removed.

When tiling onto tiles it is important to make sure that the joints on the new tiles do not line with the joints in the old tiles.

I'm sure some people sit on here, just waiting for me to answer a post then they can add, "no that's not right, this is how you do it".

It would make my life much easier if they would answer in the first place

well you can buy adhesive for tiling over tiles. But normal stuff will work

however I have never understood why people dont just take the tiles off underneath

Thanks for the replies guys

We would take them off, most we have however some are bedded in cement ie a partition wall which goes onto the bedroom............this is quite a thin wall

If we had hacked em off likelihood is it would crack the newly plastered wall in the bedroom

We have leveled everything off already so it looks OK

Just wondered about the tiles really

If we could get em off we really would

So normal adhesive should do the job ie good quaility Bal

BAL is used by many pro's and should be fine

bal is good

I like cerafix from B&Q, never had a problem with it but never tried to use it over existing tiles

You can use any Bal adhesive apart from Single part flexible and Rapidset flexible, CTF3 and Rapidset can be used with an additive.

Basically all the ready mixed Bal can be used.
